A unified historical record uniting biblical and Egyptian chronology for the second millennium BC has yet to be written. Biblical scholars, historians, and archaeologists who believe that Israel developed into a nation while living in Egypt have not been able to agree on when they entered Egypt, nor on how long they stayed. However, the light of God’s Word reveals a clear path out of this uncertainty if one can trust certain controversial passages from the Masoretic text. A resolution to the controversy of the duration of Israel’s sojourn in Egypt is proposed since the Promised Land was given to Abraham and his progeny as their new homeland. Because the sojourn applied to Abraham’s descendants while they lived in a land not their own, no part of Abraham’s life in Canaan could belong to the sojourn. Therefore, the sojourn of Israel in Egypt lasted 430 years from when Jacob and the children of Israel entered Egypt until the Exodus.
