Abstract

"Let us now praise famous men, and our fathers that begat us." Ecclesiasticus 44:1 "There is a river in the ocean: in the severest droughts it never fails, and in the mightiest floods it never overflows; its banks and abottom are of cold water, while its currents is of warm; the Gulf of Mexico is its fountain, and its mouth is in the Arctic Seas. It is the Gulf Stream. There is in the world no other such majestic flow of waters. Its current is more rapid than the Mississippi or the Amazon, and its volume more than a thousand times greater." From The Physical Geography of the Sea by Matthew Fontaine Maury. It is a rather poorly understood fact that many of the founding fathers, of what we know today as modern science, were individuals who believed that natural world was understandable because the Creator endowed it with order and tus evidences the handprint of design. The accomplishments and philosophy of Matthew Fontaine Maury "pathfinder of the sea" and "father of modern oceanography" are little known today even in creationist circles. However, in the middle of the last century he was considered by many to be the foremost scientist in North America and there was hardly a civilized country untouched by his work and reputation. The purpose of this paper is to document the life and work of Matthew Fontaine Maury, demonstrating that his allegiance to Scripture and his theistic world view were the basis for his outstanding achievement which revolutionized the science of oceanography and meteorology and significantly advanced astronomy.
